PROGRAM NOTE
On January 16th, 2026, my Grandmother Joyce passed away from Alzheimer's Disease.
She was a formidable force for good. She met everyone with unconditional love and kindness, and had the most unforgettable, contagious laughter. Grandma Joyce possessed a spark for adventure that outpaced everyone else, and she lived life with the utmost joy and reverence for our Lord. She was well-traveled, wholly virtuous, and deeply loved.
Joyce is the third movement of my Symphony No. 1 (2024), a work that deals with the vicious realities of Alzheimer's Disease. This movement — a theme in the form of a fugue — reflects on my Grandmother's character before the dementia took over, on the notion that the longer we live with those affected by the disease, the easier it becomes to lose sight of who there were. In her honor new revisions have been made to Joyce, and has now been extracted from the symphony as a standalone work.
To know my Grandmother was truly a special gift. She will live on and be cherished by my family and I in our memories forever.
