Inventions on Inventions for alto saxophone and baritone saxophone will be premiered by Jordan Calhoun and Trinity Bahng at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, U.S.A. on September 26th, 2026. The consortium for this brand-new work is now open to join. Anyone can join this consortium.
Inventions on Inventions was written for Jordan Calhoun and Trinity Bahng, for their non-degree recital at the University of North Texas College of Music on September 26th, 2026. The theme of their recital was "novelties", which I wanted to incorporate into the piece. Novelty refers to something that is new or original, like an invention... the light bulb, the steam engine or the printing press, for example. An "invention" is also a type of short musical form for two voices, made famous by Baroque-era composer J. S. Bach with his 15 Inventions (BWV 772-286), which were written for his eldest son as instructional material. In the spirit of both the technological and the musical innovations throughout history, Inventions on Inventions is divided into five short movements, each pairing the ingenuity of a particular historic invention with styles and conventions inspired by Bach's famed two-part Inventions.
