PROGRAM NOTE
The word "herculean" refers to or relates to the iconic character Hercules from Roman mythology. Hercules is famous for his god-like strength and immense bravery, and is often depicted in art and literature as a symbol of heroism and perseverance. In the vernacular sense, "herculean" also refers to something - usually a task or feat - that displays or requires extraordinary strength, power, intensity, or difficulty. Herculean for horn octet evokes these characteristics through a neo-Romantic style by combining broad, sweeping melodic lines with powerful harmonies and energetic gestures.
Herculean was premiered on February 12th, 2026 by the University of North Texas Horn Octet at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.A., conducted by Katherine McBain.
