Program Note
Columbia Fanfare for brass and percussion echoes the power and grandeur of the largest river in the Pacific Northwest and the fourth largest river in the United States, the Columbia River. Not only is the river known for its significant size and ecological imprint, but it also provides power to millions of citizens across seven states, generating 44 percent of all hydroelectric power in the nation. This fanfare takes on a neo-Coplandian character to pay homage to an iconic American landscape while incorporating rumbling ostinatos in the percussion and forward-moving exclamations in the brass to simulate the Columbia's relentlessly churning currents.
